Walking alongside women participating in our New Life Recovery program at Shepherd’s Door is a privilege unlike any other. It’s even more of a privilege to witness them after twelve-plus months of deep and intense work. As a growth leader, I have the opportunity to invest in women who choose to stay beyond their initial recovery journey—women who commit to giving back while continuing their own healing.
The New Life Recovery Service Program is a six-month commitment where graduates of our program serve the house and support women still in recovery. During this time, they gain work experience, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of what it means to live in sustainable recovery. Some even feel called to continue for a second six-month term. My role is to walk with each of them, guiding their spiritual growth, equipping them for work, and helping them step into leadership.
One of the most inspiring transformations I’ve had the privilege of witnessing is Emily’s journey. When Emily first entered the New Life Program, she was broken—unsure of her worth and uncertain how to build a future for herself and her young son, Raiden. Over time, I watched as she began to believe in herself. The Service Program became a pivotal space for her continued healing and growth, allowing her to step into responsibility with confidence.
Emily has become an advocate—for herself and for Raiden. She navigated the process of getting him assessed at school, securing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to help him thrive. She spent hours on public transportation, taking him to critical appointments and ensuring he received the Social Security benefits and services that would support his everyday life.
For herself, Emily took bold steps in building a stable foundation. She now has a counselor, a sponsor, and a supportive community she can rely on. She reinstated her driver’s license and is close to completing her GED. These milestones weren’t easy, but she tackled each one with perseverance.
Through the Service Program, she has also gained valuable work experience—first serving in the children’s center as an aide and now working in the kitchen, where she’s learning catering and leadership skills. With each new step, her confidence has grown, and it’s been incredible to see her blossom into the strong, capable woman she was created to be.
Now, Emily is looking ahead with hope and excitement. She’s considering moving into our Community House, a supportive living environment, as she transitions back into work and explores her next steps.
Watching her transformation has been an incredible reminder of what healing, support, and perseverance can do. Emily’s story is one of courage, hard work, and faith—and I cannot wait to see where her journey takes her next.
