About Homelessness

Homelessness in Portland, beyond: Videos that make you think

A story is a powerful thing. Everyone who walks through the yellow door of our Burnside Shelter comes with a story of how they got there. We hear of loss, struggle, sickness, hunger and addiction. But, in time, those stories can grow into testimonies of hope, strength and restoration.

It takes time, food, shelter, prayer … and most of all, it takes you. Your ongoing support of Portland Rescue Mission makes it possible for stories like these to have a happy ending.

To stay current with all of of our “Stories of Hope,” you can read about those in our blog, watch the testimonials of people that have come through our programs firsthand or sign up to receive updates from us by email.

We also wanted to share with you some stories from other cities that have touched our hearts recently below. Please watch and be encouraged. Also, if you have a favorite video of your own, we would invite you to share it with us on our official Facebook page.

Being human and alone

At Portland Rescue Mission, our mission is to give hope and restore life. We want the men, women and children that walk through our doors to feel like they are getting a second chance. We want them to know there is always a chance to start over and make their lives new again. It’s why we have our Connect program (which is part of our Hope Ministries) along with our New Life Ministries at Shepherd’s Door (for women and children) and The Harbor (for men).

Connect is a three-to-four-month program that is designed for participants to transition quickly off the streets and into permanent housing and/or stable employment. Our New Life Ministries is a 12-month program designed to help men, women and children seeking help for addiction recovery.
