Students “Run to the Rescue”
Two Portland high school students decided to do things differently.
As part of their studies at Southridge High School, Matt and Grant needed to complete a senior project. Most students write an extensive research paper. But these Beaverton seniors came up with a better idea.
“We wanted to get real-world experience and benefit the community,” says Matt. Their idea? Organize a run, get sponsors, market it to students, and donate the proceeds to charity.
Their project was a huge success. Last Friday, 175 students showed up at school (even though it was a school holiday) to attend the “Run to the Rescue” event. Together they raised $1740 to provide meals and care for homeless men, women and children.
“Portland Rescue Mission works wonders assisting homeless people,” says Matt. “When we heard the touching stories of how lives were being changed there, we knew we wanted to donate to them.”
Matt and Grant are grateful to their parents and mentors for guidance during the project. Local businesses added support through donations and prizes: Golden Apple Fundraising, Ruby Tuesday, Subway, Joe’s, Ensley Orthodontics, and Conestoga Middle School.
