Building Hope, One Step at a Time

Charlie’s Role in Guiding Troy Towards a New Chapter of Recovery

As a Growth Counselor, my role is to walk alongside each man on his journey to recovery, helping him build a foundation for lasting change. It starts with guiding them through the emotional turbulence that often accompanies early recovery. Once they’ve stabilized, we create a personalized recovery plan that includes attending meetings, securing a sponsor, and preparing for life after the program.

Troy wrestled at the beginning of his program about how much time and effort he needed to invest in the program. Like other men, Troy experienced continued pressure to get back to his life or continue working on himself. Through multiple experiences, Troy eventually committed himself to our New Life long-term one-year program. This gave him the freedom to work on changing his life from the ground up so that he would be able to maintain his recovery when he left and into his future.

The following steps are truly transformative! We dive deep into the patterns of thinking that can trigger relapse, followed by an honest review of their life experiences. Together, we tackle unresolved pain from childhood that often fuels addiction, using a process of grieving and reflection to break through denial. In Troy’s instance, he is learning to care for himself rightly, maintain healthy boundaries with others, and grow spiritually, especially in serving others still suffering from addictions.

The final phase is about preparing for long-term success. I love this stage – we help each man establish a strong support network and develop a plan that will keep him grounded and safe as he transitions out of the Harbor and into a new chapter of life. I’m excited to announce that Troy graduated from The Harbor yesterday! All your prayers and support genuinely make our work at The Harbor achievable. We know we could not do this without a supportive community coming alongside us.
