A volunteer team from the Sellwood New Seasons grocery store recently arrived at Shepherd’s Door – our addiction recovery facility for women and children – ready to meet new friends, learn more about what we do, and, of course – get their hands dirty.
“Our group was looking for an opportunity to get out into the community and work together as a team, while also learning more about Portland Rescue Mission’s programs,” said Marah, the Sellwood store community coordinator. “Given our longstanding relationship as donation partners, volunteering with them was the next logical step.”
Armed with shovels, rakes and other gardening tools, the team spent the afternoon cleaning the grounds and getting the gardens ready for spring planting. As the New Seasons crew cleaned the raised beds, residents from Shepherd’s Door were able to begin planting seeds in the fresh soil.

The gardens, which were put in two years ago, teach gardening and cultivation skills, in addition to providing fresh produce for the women and children healing from the effects of homelessness, addiction and abuse in our New Life Ministry addiction recovery program.
“Taking care of our community and providing access to healthy food are very important to us,” Marah said. “We loved seeing the garden with 29 raised beds that provide fresh fruits and vegetables to residents.” Thank you New Seasons for your continued support!
