Tonight, temperatures will to dip below freezing again, as KATU News predicts 1-3 inches of snow falling this afternoon in the Portland Metro Area. This winter emergency is threatening the lives of vulnerable men, women and children, some of whom will spend the night on the streets with only cardboard or plastic sheeting to protect them from the elements, just like Robin.
“One day in the winter I was walking by a dumpster and I got a really nice piece of cardboard and I thought… wow I’m going to sleep good tonight. Before you know it, I was waking up in the morning and I was freezing cold, I was wet, it was like 30 degrees out and someone had stolen my cardboard. My feet were numb, my hands were numb and I was shaking. It was cold! And that piece of cardboard meant everything to me that night.” – Robin
This is just one of the many heartbreaking stories of need we hear every year during the cold nights of winter and early spring. With chilling rain and vicious winds, the threat of hypothermia and frostbite is a real fear for men, women and children experiencing homelessness in our community.
